The Dubai Debt Crisis

The recent news from Dubai has rocked local, regional, and global financial and political circles. On December 9, 2009, Center for Contermporary Arab Studies at Gerogetown University assembled a panel of experts to discuss the economic and political implications of the situation. What are the causes of the crisis? How seriously has Dubai’s reputation been hurt? How long might recovery take? What role should—or will—Dubai’s neighbors take in easing the situation? Speakers included Mr. Kevin Carey of the World Bank, Dr. Kristin Smith Diwan of American University, Dr. Jean-François Seznec of Georgetown University, and Mr. Peter Baumbusch of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP.
